Frequently Asked Questions
How our calculators work, where the numbers come from and how to use them.
General
What does HowMuchBusiness.Tax do?
We publish corporate, personal, VAT and capital gains tax rates for over 100 countries and all 50 US states, and provide calculators that estimate the total tax on a business's profit under different entity types.
How accurate are the calculators?
The calculators apply statutory rates and brackets to the figures you enter. They do not model every deduction, credit, local surcharge or special regime, so treat the results as estimates for comparison, not as a tax return.
Where does the tax data come from?
Rates are compiled from national tax authorities, the IRS, state departments of revenue, PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries, KPMG rate tables, the OECD and the Tax Foundation. See our methodology page for details.
How often is the data updated?
We review rates when budgets and tax laws are enacted and run a full review at least once a year. Each state and guide page shows its last updated date.
Why is VAT included in the total tax?
VAT and sales tax are usually collected from customers and offset by input tax, so the real burden on a business is lower than the figure shown. We show it separately so you can see the cash a business handles on behalf of the government.
Which business types can I calculate?
Corporation, LLC, sole proprietor and partnership. Corporations are taxed at the corporate rate with dividends taxed at personal rates; pass-through entities are taxed at personal rates.
Can I compare more than two countries?
Yes. The compare tool supports multiple countries side by side. Add countries from the compare page or build a URL like /compare/usa-vs-united-kingdom-vs-germany.
Is this tax advice?
No. Everything on this site is general information. Consult a qualified tax adviser before making decisions.
