Methodology

Where our numbers come from and what our calculators assume.

Data sources

We compile rates from primary and established secondary sources:

  • National tax authorities, finance ministries and official gazettes
  • The IRS (for example Revenue Procedure 2025-32 for 2026 federal brackets) and state departments of revenue
  • PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries and KPMG corporate, indirect and individual tax rate tables
  • OECD Corporate Tax Statistics and Tax Database
  • The Tax Foundation's annual state corporate, individual and sales tax rate reports

Where sources disagree, we use the most recent primary source.

What the calculator does

Business typeCorporate taxPersonal tax
CorporationProfit × corporate rate (federal + state for US)Remaining profit taxed as dividends using personal brackets
LLCProfit × corporate rateNone (simplified)
Sole proprietor / partnershipNoneProfit taxed using personal brackets

Profit is revenue minus expenses. Payroll tax is estimated at 15% of an assumed $50,000 average salary per employee. VAT/sales tax is shown as the standard rate applied to revenue.

Simplifications

  • We use statutory rates and brackets. We don't model deductions, credits, allowances, loss carryforwards or depreciation.
  • Personal brackets are for a single resident taxpayer.
  • Dividends are taxed with ordinary personal brackets even where a country has a lower dividend rate.
  • Brackets are expressed in local currency. Currency selection changes the label, not the exchange rate.

US state pages

State pages combine statutory rates with written analysis. Corporate and individual brackets follow the Tax Foundation's 2026 tables, cross-checked against state revenue departments. Business filing fees come from each Secretary of State's fee schedule.
